Coherence Is More Than About "Making Sense"

 Most of us believe we already know what the word coherence means.

We use it almost every day:


"Your explanation wasn't coherent."

"She spoke coherently."

"The story lacks coherence."

 

In everyday conversation, the word usually refers to whether something makes sense.

But that's only one meaning.

 

Across science, engineering, medicine, psychology, philosophy, organizational theory, and many other disciplines, coherence means something much deeper.


It describes how well multiple elements work together as an integrated whole.


That difference matters. Because once you begin seeing coherence in this broader sense, you start recognizing that it may be one of the most fundamental properties of reality itself.


Coherent vs. Coherence


Let's begin with an important distinction: coherent is an adjective. It describes the condition of a particular thing.

  • A speech can be coherent.

  • An argument can be coherent.

  • A laser beam can be coherent.

  • An organization can be coherent.

  • A family can be coherent.

  • A living organism can be coherent.


In each case, coherent simply means that something possesses a high degree of coherence.


Coherence, on the other hand, is the underlying property.


The confusion arises because everyday English has attached one particular interpretation to the adjective. When someone says, "That was coherent," we usually assume they mean, "That made sense." But "making sense" is simply one manifestation of a much broader phenomenon.


The Hidden Meaning Behind Every Definition

Although different disciplines define coherence in different ways, they all point toward the same underlying idea: Multiple elements fit together in ways that reinforce rather than contradict one another.


Notice that definition says nothing about thoughts, language, people: coherence is fundamentally about relationships.


Whether those relationships exist among light waves, neurons, ecosystems, ideas, or organizations is almost incidental. The underlying pattern remains remarkably consistent.


Coherence Across the Sciences

One reason I refer to the word, coherence, is because it already carries remarkably consistent meaning across many disciplines.



Communication

This is the meaning most of us know. A coherent explanation is one in which ideas connect logically. The individual sentences reinforce one another rather than conflict. The whole becomes understandable because its parts fit together.


Physics

In physics, coherence describes waves that maintain stable relationships with one another.

A laser produces coherent light because the individual light waves remain synchronized.

Their collective behavior produces capabilities impossible for randomly organized light.

The power comes not from the individual waves. It comes from how they relate.


Biology

Living organisms depend upon countless processes operating together.

Cells communicate. Organs coordinate. Hormones regulate. Immune systems respond.

Health is not simply the absence of disease: it is the coherence of the organism.

When coordination begins breaking down, illness often follows.


Neuroscience

The brain consists of billions of neurons. Thought, perception, memory, and consciousness do not reside in any single neuron: they emerge from coherent patterns of activity distributed across enormous neural networks. The remarkable capabilities of the brain arise from coordinated interaction.


Psychology

Psychologists often speak about a coherent sense of self. Our memories, beliefs, emotions, and experiences become organized into a stable identity. When these become fragmented or contradictory, people often experience confusion, anxiety, or disorientation. Here, coherence describes the integration of experience.


Philosophy

Many philosophers have proposed versions of the Coherence Theory of Truth. Rather than evaluating a belief in isolation, they ask whether it fits consistently within an entire network of beliefs. Again, the emphasis is not on isolated facts: it is on relationships among them.


Organizations

Organizations often focus on improving individual parts: better leadership. Better strategy. Better technology. Better culture.

But organizations succeed when these reinforce one another.

Performance suffers when, incentives contradict strategy, communication conflicts with accountability, authority fails to match responsibility. These are failures of coherence.


Ecology

Ecosystems function because countless species continually influence one another.

No organism survives alone. Healthy ecosystems maintain dynamic coherence among predators, prey, climate, nutrients, plants, fungi, and microorganisms. The system works because relationships remain balanced enough for life to persist.


A Pattern Hiding in Plain Sight


At first glance, these disciplines appear unrelated: Physics, biology, psychology, organizations, communication, ecology. Yet each uses essentially the same idea.

Coherence describes the quality of organization among interacting elements.

Not the elements themselves but their relationships.


Perhaps coherence is not merely a useful word: perhaps it is describing a universal property that appears wherever multiple parts interact.


Why This Matters

Most of us naturally think in terms of things: objects, people, departments, ideas, problems.

But many of the challenges we face are not caused by the individual parts: they arise from how those parts relate:

  • A marriage rarely fails because two people are inherently flawed.

  • A city rarely succeeds because every institution is excellent.

  • A company rarely struggles because every employee is ineffective.


More often, the relationships among the parts become fragmented; we instinctively look for broken things.

Coherence asks us to look for broken relationships.


Instead of asking, "What's wrong?"

We begin asking, "What isn't working together?"


Why "Coherence" Is the Right Word to Use


Many alternatives sound appealing: alignment, integration, consistency, harmony, order.

Each captures part of the picture. But each also misses something essential.

  • Alignment emphasizes direction.

  • Integration emphasizes joining parts.

  • Consistency emphasizes the absence of contradiction.

  • Harmony suggests pleasant agreement.

  • Order suggests arrangement.


Coherence includes all of these while remaining broader: it describes the dynamic quality by which distinctions, relationships, structures, and behaviors reinforce one another to produce a functioning whole.


That is why scientists continue returning to the same word across so many disciplines.

Not because they borrowed it from one another but because they independently encountered the same phenomenon.


Seeing the World Differently

Once you begin recognizing coherence, it becomes difficult not to see it everywhere.

In conversations, in families, in governments, in ecosystems, in music, in organizations. Even within yourself.

You begin to notice that many of life's most important questions are no longer about the individual pieces: they are about the quality of the relationships among them.


Coherence is not simply another concept: it may be one of the deepest ways of understanding how complex reality holds together.
